Writing this article, I've been totally amazed at the quality of green bean roasters on the market. Today's products are full of great features and so, so easy to use. But, if you're new to it all, how do you know which roaster is best for you?

Well, you can make a good start right here by reading this article for a thorough overview of the basic domestic roasting machines and their pros and cons. First let's take a look at the two types of roaster - fluid bed (aka hot air) AND drum roasters.

First up is the fluid bed roaster, or hot air coffee roaster. The fluid bed roaster functions very similarly to a home popcorn popper, in that it uses a glass rotating roasting chamber to keep the beans and the hot air in movement, allowing for a very even roast. Fluid bed roasters work best for novice home coffee roasters that are only looking to roast a small amount of coffee for themselves and their family.

Drum roasters, on the other hand, are larger, more expensive contraptions made mostly for commercial use. Drum roasters are box-shaped and unlike the fluid bed roaster, does not allow you to view the beans as they are roasted. Drum roasters use convection or infrared radiation to heat the beans and are more for hardcore coffee enthusiasts than fluid bed roasters. These hardcore coffee drinkers drink a lot of coffee and it is almost a hobby to them.

The pros and cons of the two types of roasters: Fluid bed roasters are inexpensive, allow you to see the coffee beans as they are roasted, and they are fast, taking only 10-20 minutes tops to roast your coffee beans. On the other hand, fluid bed roasters also tend to be smoky, so you have to have good ventilation unless you want to set off your smoke detectors every time you roast and they only hold a few ounces of coffee at a time, usually about a 3-day supply.

Drum roasters give your beans a smooth, even full-bodied roast and can hold larger quantities of beans-up to 8 ounces at a time, and some of them are computerized for optimal roasting. Adversely, drum roasters tend to be expensive (ranging as high as $500 or more), take longer to roast the beans, and don't allow you to view the beans as they are roasted, meaning you have to rely on smell and sound to know when they are done unless your drum roaster is a high-end computerized model that does this for you.

If you are new to coffee bean roasting, the best bet home coffee roaster for you would be a more inexpensive fluid bed roaster. That way you can acquaint yourself thoroughly with the process before moving up to the big dogs-the drum roasters. Drum roasters are for people that are really serious about their coffee and are willing to shell out the big bucks to get the optimal coffee drinking experience.

1. Fluid Bed Home Coffee Roasters - aka Hot Air Coffee Roasters

As mentioned above, fluid bed roasters are the best option for the novice home coffee roasting enthusiasts because they are inexpensive, easy to use, and are optimized for home use by individuals and families.

How it works: Fluid bed roasters function like a home popcorn popper - they use hot air to roast the beans. In fact, some folks (like myself!) have actually used home popcorn poppers to roast their own coffee. In a fluid bed roaster, the coffee beans are placed in a glass, rotating roasting chamber that allows you to see the beans as they are roasted. The rotating chamber and roiling hot air within the roaster give the beans an even roast. The beans will roast very fast, taking a absolute maximum of 20 minutes, so it's best to not leave them unattended for very long-you'll want to monitor them as best you can so they are not burned and ruined. Most of the time, the roast will be around 10-12 minutes.

Price: One of the most attractive things about fluid bed home coffee roasters is that they are inexpensive. After all, nobody wants to spend a ton of money to try something they've never done before. Most fluid bed roasters will run you about $50-$150-not a bad price if you consider what most small appliances cost these days.

How to Use: Fluid bed home coffee roasters are also notoriously easy to use. All you need to do is place the coffee beans in the roasting chamber and set timer to the time that you desire. When the beans are done, remove the roasting chamber and put the beans in a bowl to cool. Remove the chaff collector, which contains all the non-essential granules that come off the beans in the roasting process, and dump it out. It's that easy. Once the beans are cool, you're ready to grind them and start making coffee!

Another reason why fluid bed home coffee roasters are great is that they are purposely made for home use. Unlike drum roasters, fluid bed roasters are unobtrusive, inexpensive countertop appliances that only make about a 3-day supply of coffee at a time, though you can of course make less than that. This is perfect for individuals, couples and families because if you roast a lot of beans and don't use them within a week, a bitter flavoring will develop.

The only real downside to fluid bed home coffee roasters is that some tend to be a bit smoky, which can set off smoke detectors and irritate people who are sensitive to such things. However, there are models out there that counteract this, but such models usually take a bit longer to roast the beans.

Fluid bed home coffee roasters are recommended for home use essentially because that is what they are designed to do. These roasters were created with the everyman in mind. They are easy to use and inexpensive-two things appealing to just about anybody.

2. Drum Home Coffee Roasters

Now - you should probably only read this section if you are a die-hard coffee enthusiast who has already tried roasting your own coffee beans! If you've been using a fluid bed roaster but find that it's just not getting the job done, then maybe a drum home coffee roaster is just what you need.

How it works: Drum home coffee roasters differ from fluid bed roasters in that they use convection or infrared radiation to roast the beans, rather than hot air. It's kind of like the difference between a regular sauna and an infrared sauna. If you've ever experienced both, you know what a difference it is. The infrared sauna is a big improvement over the saunas of old. Infrared radiation may sound kind of scary, but all it actually refers to is the light wavelength given off by the sun that conveys heat. It is what makes you feel hot on a sunny day. Infrared energy is perfectly natural and actually gives your roasted coffee beans a fuller-bodied taste than what you would get with a fluid bed roaster.

Roast Large Batches: Another great thing about drum home coffee roasters is that they can hold a large quantity of coffee beans. For those that drink a lot of coffee, this is an absolute must. The typical drum roaster can actually hold up to 8 ounces of coffee beans, as opposed to the fluid bed roaster which can only make enough for about a 3-day supply at once. While this may be enough for the average household, more and more households these days are embracing the "coffee culture" and therefore need more than what the fluid bed roaster can supply. So, unless you want to make several batches in your fluid bed roaster, you might as well step up to the plate and get a drum roaster.

Price: Though drum home coffee roasters are excellent appliances, they do have their cons. First, they are expensive. If you are going to buy a drum roaster, be prepared to spend three to four times what you would spend on a fluid bed roaster, if not more. Most drum roaster run at about $500 or more. Also, drum roasters take quite a long time to roast the beans, as opposed to the Fluid bed roasters, which only take 20 minutes at the most. Lastly, drum roasters do not allow you to view the beans as they are being roasted, which may result in some burned or otherwise ruined beans. Although some drum roasters are computerized to compensate for this, it will cost you more for those models.

All in all, though, drum home coffee roasters are great appliances for hardcore coffee enthusiasts. If you are a daily coffee drinker that takes your "hobby" very seriously, you might want to invest in one. A drum roaster can roast beans that will give you a much more full-bodied tasting coffee than you've ever had before and at a much more affordable price (as compared to your local caf?) in the long run.

Many a coffee aficionado would turn up their nose at the thought of adding flavorings to their beloved black beverage. But, if you're not an aficionado, and you didn't pay exorbitant amounts of money for single-estate specialty coffee beans, then why not indulge in trying some of the fine coffee flavoring syrups, or flavored coffee beans available today? To help you make the most of coffee flavorings, here is a summary of the things you should know before buying.

Generally sweet, and always indulgent, coffee flavorings such as vanilla, hazelnut or amoretto can be found bottled in the form of coffee syrups. Added after the coffee is brewed, the advantage of using these syrups over using pre-flavored coffee beans is that your grinding and brewing equipment does not become tainted by flavor extracts on the beans.

About the only rule when using syrups to make flavored coffee is "don't overdo it". Remember, the flavor should complement your favorite drink, rather than overwhelm it.

Here are some general guidelines to help you buy only the best coffee syrups:

Brix - the word 'brix' is used to describe the solids content of a syrup. The higher the brix, the higher the concentration of sugar and flavoring in the liquid. Many high-quality coffee syrups have a brix between 60 and 70 - that is, 60-70% solids. Higher concentration syrups will cost more initially, but you use less so they will last longer. Flavor vs. Sugar - even though a brix of 62 indicates a high quality syrup, you can't be sure of how much of the solids content is sugar and how much is flavor without checking the label and/or taste-testing the syrup. Some manufacturers promote their syrups as adding 'flavor without sweetness'. Your personal preference will dictate whether you prefer the sweetness. If you normally take sugar, you might find you do not need to add sugar if the syrup is quite sweet. Be aware of very thick, sticky syrups - these may be disguising a poor flavor extract with an overdose of sugar. Sweetener - you will find most syrups are flavored with cane-sugar. Other popular sweeteners include fruit-juice and corn sugar. Syrups that use other than cane-sugar are generally not as sweet - something you may or may not prefer. In any case, look for the "all-natural" statement on the label if you want to avoid artificial sweeteners.Preservatives - some syrups are preservative-free. The flavor may benefit from this - just remember that the shelf-life of these syrups will be shorter than those with added preservatives.Sugar Free or Low Carb - due to consumer demand, some companies are producing sugar-free coffee syrups. To be an informed consumer, you should check the label to determine whether these are unsweetened or artificially-sweetened and purchase according to your personal preference.Purpose - most syrups are general purpose, but some syrups will be labelled as baking, dessert or drink flavorings. They will vary in thickness, sweetness and flavoring depending on their purpose.

Once you get your syrup home, why not try:

Combining syrups to create unique flavorsUsing syrups as dessert toppingsAdding syrups to smoothies Adding syrups to soda water Using syrups as a glaze for meat or vegetables (fruit-flavored syrups are nice for this)Adding syrups to a salad dressing or vinaigrette

If you would like to buy flavored coffee or syrups online, we recommend CoffeeAM.com. They are running a promotion at the moment where you will get Free Coffee With Any Purchase! So you could by a flavored coffee, or syrup and get coffee free.

From caramel, to pumpkin pie, gingerbread, cinnamon or butterscotch, there are an abundance of pre-flavored coffee beans to sample and enjoy. Beans are generally flavored using essential oils, plant derivatives and other aromatic flavorings. The flavors are mixed with warm beans straight out of the roaster to ensure as much flavor as possible is absorbed by the bean. Most flavoring is 3% w/w (weight to weight) which is 1/2oz of flavoring to 1lb of coffee.

Here are some tips to help you buy only the best flavored coffee beans:

You can tell the freshness of flavored beans by their appearance. Freshly flavored beans will appear glossy - very oily and wet.Be sure you are buying from a reputable coffee roaster to ensure your beans and flavorings are of a high quality. Some roasters may be adding flavor to low-quality beans thinking that their low-quality will be disguised by the flavoring. (This is usually not very successful - a bit like trying to cover up bad dessert with sugary syrup.)

Here are some reasons why you might prefer to try pre flavored coffee beans over coffee syrups:

Aroma - the combination of the aromatic flavoring and the aroma of the bean itself can be quite exquisite. About 76 percent of taste is experienced through the nose, so the aroma makes for much of the flavored coffee experience. Consider it a kind of coffee aromatherapy.Sugar-Free / Low-Carb - most pre flavored coffee beans are flavored without using sugar. Even so, if sugar is contained in the flavoring, the amount of sugar in the final product is negligible. Being sugar-free also gives you the freedom to use sweetener of your choice.Buy Pumpkin Pie Flavored Coffee at CoffeeAM.com!

An inexpensive and more body-friendly (i.e. no sugar, no preservatives, no artificial anythings) way of adding natural flavor to your beans is to fill an airtight container with freshly roasted, whole beans. To the container, try adding any one or more of the following:

Whole vanilla bean(s)Cinnamon Stick(s)Cloves and Nutmeg (use sparingly) CardamomCitrus Peel (lemon or orange)Mint Leaves

Alternatively, a simple sprinkle of cinnamon, or a dash of liqueur (Amaretto, Irish Creme) after your coffee is brewed can add the hint of flavor you've been craving.

The low-down on milk frothers and steaming milk for your coffee recipes

Can't find what you're looking for? Find it here!

Many famous hot coffee drinks - such as Espresso Macchiato, Cappuccino, Caff? Latt? - are made with milk. And whilst the recipe might say "add steamed milk", sometimes it's not that simple. If your Caff? Latt? is going to taste anything like what you'd hoped for, there's a number of things you've got to get right. Let's make things easy by summing it up right here.

The most important items are discussed below and include: Choosing a milk frother or milk steamerThe good, the bad and the ugly results of frothing milkNotes on milk fat percentage, temperature and type of pitcherQuality Home Espresso Machine with Steam Wand.

This is the ultimate for home users... if you're willing to spend the cash. You'll be able to create microfoam (see below) and recreate any style of milk-based coffee drink. It will take a couple of minutes to froth milk, but you won't need to preheat it. Always remember to wipe-down the steam arm so you don't get any crusties!

Budget Home Espresso Machine with Steam Wand.

Ok, maybe I'm classifying machines a little broadly here, but you get the idea - you get what you pay for. Most cheaper machines have a steam wand that is supplied with a frothing attachment. My advice... throw the attachment in the bin! You'll get better results without it. In any case, you probably won't get microfoam (see below) with a cheaper machine... but you might get a decent Meringue.

Automatic Frothers

I've never used one of these. They're a bit too fussy and cumbersome for my liking. I guess they'd be great if you have a family of hot-chocolate lovers.

Battery-Powered Frothers

These, such as the Aerolatte Frother, are cheap and produce good results for the home. You will need to preheat your milk before frothing. Can take a minute or two for large quantities of milk, but are very simple to clean with a quick rinse under running water.

Manual Frothers

These are like a modified French Press (actually you can use a French Press). Again you need to preheat your milk. These can froth large quantities of milk quite quickly, but take a bit more effort to clean properly (you can place some of them in the dishwasher).

Microfoam (or microfroth) is created in seconds by a good barista on professional espresso machines. At home, you can create microfoam if you have a high-quality espresso machine with a steam wand. You'll need a bit more patience, because home machines don't have the same pressure in the steam wand... that means it can take a couple of minutes for you to properly heat your milk. You'll also need a lot of practice to get it just right.

The only way to produce true microfoam is with a good quality steam wand that has enough pressure to swirl the milk and the ability to heat the milk to the correct temperature. You won't get microfoam with a frother. Microfoam is like a thick milk... like runny-yoghurt in consistency. If you swirl it around in the jug it has a shiny, acrylic-like appearance.

Microfoam is made of tiny, microscopic bubbles. It is the only frothed milk you can use to create free pour Latte Art.

One day, I'll get around to writing a milk-foaming guide for this site. But for now, you can't beat the CoffeeGeek.com article - see Milk Frothing Guide - Frothing for Newbies & Intermediates

Many frothing devices on the market today - including battery-powered gadgets such as the Aerolatte Frother, the Froth Au lait and the steam wands on cheaper espresso machines - are capable of producing meringue-like foam.

The truth is, it's not so bad. It can be watery underneath, but you get a nice blob of smooth foam on which to dust your cocoa... and in the case of most home-coffee enthusiasts, that's all you're looking for.

If you're not a coffee geek in persuit of the most excellent microfoam... or if you are a coffee geek exhausted and defeated by the illusive 'rosetta', you might just settle for some nice, warm meringue milk on top of your cappuccino!

Well, the description speaks for itself... and this is the stuff to stear clear of. If you've got a budget home espressp machine and you're getting a lot of this 'dishwasher foam', try removing the frothing attachment and just use the steam wand on it's own... you might get better results.

Also, if you're using a little frothing tool, try keeping it just under the surface of the milk to reduce the size of the bubbles. That way, you're more likely to get a nice meringue-like texture.

Milk Fat Percentage: Contrary to popular belief, it shouldn't really matter what type of milk you use. Some people argue that their special 'crema' or 'cappuccino' milk out-froths all the rest. Others stand by their skim milk. The truth is, any milk with froth... even soy milk. So choose the milk you prefer and master frothing that.

Heat: Getting the temperature just right is important. At the end of frothing, your milk should be at 150 deg F or 65 degrees C - no more and no less. If you overheat, you'll find that the milk will be very runny and may taste burnt. If you don't heat enough, not only will your drink be too cold, but you'll miss out on developing the maximum sweetness in the milk.

Pitcher: When using a steam wand, most baristas use a stainless steel milk frothing pitcher. Start out with a cold pitcher... this allows you more time to froth the milk before it gets too hot.

Before You Look At Home Coffee Roasters...

My passion for Home Coffee Roasters was ignited when I began my search for the perfect home espresso. In spite of me purchasing a top of the line domestic espresso machine - designed by World barista Champion Paul Bassett - I still struggled to achieve the perfect crema and perfect pour.

I soon learned that the most important factor in achieving the espresso "god shot" is fresh coffee. Coffee roasted less than 5-7 days ago is best.

The main problem I found was that the coffee I could buy from commercial coffee roasters was very expensive. Here in Australia, it would cost anywhere from $40 to $60 per kilo. On the other hand, I noticed that green beans were as inexpensive as $10 per kilo.

So I decide to become an expert home coffee roaster! And that's how my journey began.

As I mentioned, my key motivations for home coffee roasting were:

1. To have the freshest possible coffee necessary to create the perfect pour - a "god shot" on my domestic espresso machine.

2. To save money on buying beans from a local Coffee Bean Roaster.

And because money was an issue, my first experience with Coffee Roasting Equipment was with a modified popcorn popper. A very inexpensive machine at less than $30 AUD.

You must know this BEFORE you start researching home coffee roasters:

Are you a coffee enthusiast with lots of time on your hands? If you are, then by all means, go ahead and get yourself an inexpensive popcorn popper! Or modify you BBQ! Go crazy. Learn everything you can about roasting... about temperature, roasting profiles, cooling techniques.
OR do you simply want fresh coffee - without worrying how it gets to you? Most people fit into this category. And if that sounds like you, then you are definitely in for a treat! Today's home coffee roasters are superb. They're easy-to-use, fuss-free, mess-free and automatic.

So which kind of coffee-lover are you?

1. Are you a raving mad, build-your own-roaster, "learn from the burn" (i.e. burning your beans!) coffee addict?
OR are you a coffee lover whose taste buds are educated enough to adore fresh roasted coffee - and despise anything less!

If you're Type 1, get building! Get burning. Get researching. You'll love it.

If you're Type 2, your new home coffee roaster could be arriving on your doorstep in just a couple of days. And I recommend buying online for the best value. You're only a few clicks away from fresh roasted aroma in your home!

Home Coffee Roasters to Make Your Life Interesting or Easy

I've created this hubpage to help you if you're looking into inexpensive home coffee roasters - or if you're just starting out on the journey of roasting your own coffee. Personally, I spent way too long in the "thinking about it" stage. When I finally made the leap into home coffee roasting, I couldn't believe how simple it was.

So how do YOU get started with Home Coffee Roasters?

Firstly, decide on your level of commitment (or insanity!)...

Are you a "hands-on" coffee enthusiast or would you rather be a totally "hands-off" coffee bean roaster?

PART ONE: THE 'HANDS-ON' APPROACH

If you are a hands-on person, then I'd recommend exactly as I did. Go out and get yourself a cheap popcorn popper. There is plenty of free information and articles on the internet about how you can roast with a popcorn popper.

A popper is the ultimate in hands-on, DIY coffee roasting equipment. As such, you will need to know a fair bit about the roasting process. I suggest you do the following:

Educate yourself about the coffee roasting process.Learn about the different degrees and styles of roast - from light cinnamon to dark French.Find a good green beans supplier.Buy a cheap popcorn popper.Make a START!

Popcorn Popper WARNINGS

There may be a bit of trial and error involved for you to find the perfect roast to suit you. And you should also be aware that - with popcorn poppers - the roasting process changes often. It is especially affected by the weather - temperature and humidity. There will be mess! Chaff will fly everywhere... and beans may spill. There will be smoke. The smoke smells. It starts out smelling good - but it lingers and turns stale.

Moral of the story - use your popcorn popper in your garage. :-)

PART TWO: THE RELAXED, PUSH-BUTTON APPROACH

Now, if you'd like something a little more sophisticated - and can afford to spend a little money, then I'd recommend buying a dedicated, purpose-built home coffee roaster, such as the Hearthware IRoast2.

These machines are small enough for the home and flexible enough to suit everyone from the total greenhorn to the experienced roaster. It can be as simple as pressing the preset button, or as complex as programming your own roasting profiles. In that sense, these machines grow with you.

Other big advantages of purpose-built home coffee roasters over the popcorn popper:

No mess. Excellent little chaff collectors mean it's safe for you to roast indoors. The lovely fresh-roasted aroma, without the smoke... so no lingering stale smell 2 weeks later!Perfectly sized for a few days' portion.

The main disadvantage of these machines then, is price. That said, when you consider how much you'll save by roasting your own beans, the machine will pay for itself. Depending on how much coffee you drink, it could pay for itself in as little as six months.

GET STARTED

So what are you waiting for? Popcorn popper, or yuppy home coffee roaster... it's all terrific fun... get started today!

Coffee Basics: Espresso vs Regular Coffee

Have you ever wondered how to make café-style coffee at home? Firstly, you need to know that there are two basic styles of coffee: espresso and regular, or non-espresso. Espresso forms the basis of coffees served in cafés and restaurants, whilst regular coffee is usually reserved for the home.

Perhaps the most familiar at-home coffee, regular coffee is generally a 200ml serve of medium-strength brew, served in a mug or cup. The method of brewing regular coffee depends on the equipment at hand. Common equipment includes the French Press (also known as a press-pot or plunger), the Drip/Filter and the Percolator, amongst many other brewing devices.

No matter what equipment is used, regular coffee brewing always involves hot water coming into contact with preground beans for at least one minute. Compared to espresso, regular coffee is brewed at a lower temperature for a longer time, uses more water and requires beans to be more coarsely ground. The result is a satisfying, full-cup serve of coffee.

Espresso, on the other hand, is brewed by forcing a small amount of steaming hot water through tightly packed, finely ground coffee beans. Often called a "short black", the result of this high-pressure brew is a small shot of intensely flavoured, black liquid, topped with a light brown foam known as crèma.

Espresso can be brewed using an espresso machine, or a Stovetop espresso pot (Moka Pot). Unlike regular coffee, the espresso shot forms the basis of many coffee styles. Lattes, macchiatos, long blacks and affogatos are just a few of the espresso-based coffee styles appearing on today's café menus. By investing in a Stovetop Espresso Pot, or an espresso machine, you will have all the tools you need to make fantastic, cafe style coffee at home.

Although many coffee drinkers prefer one style of coffee over the other, neither is better or worse than the other. Both espresso and regular coffee have their place. By including both styles in your repertoire, you will add fun and variety to your coffee making experience.

Here's the Cheapest Way to Brew Your Own Amazing Coffee at Home

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

23 of 25 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Do you really want to taste your coffee? Yes? Get this!, January 28, 2004 This review is from: Perfect Brew Cone Filter (Pack of 12) (Grocery) This is the way to make coffee if you are like me -- love coffee but hate the sour bitter watery flavor you get out of most coffee machines.

In regular machines, you usually can't taste the difference between brands of coffee. That all changes once you figure out how to make coffee the right way -- in one of these.

Coffee recipe in the melita:

3-4 tablespoons of medium ground coffee grinds. The amount depends on the roast of the coffee. Darker more flavorful beans get about 3 tbsp, light breakfast roast beans get 4 tbsp.

12 oz (1 1/2 cup) cold water in microwave safe measuring cup.

Microwave 2 1/2 minutes in microwave (until bubbles start forming on the sides of the container) The goal is 155-170F water. (If you happen to have a meat thermometer -- that is medium well.)

***DON'T boil the water**** it leaves the coffee tasting bitter and horrible.

Hotter water gives you more bitter coffee, but takes less grinds. Cooler water gives less bitter more flavorful coffee, but uses lots and lots of grinds to get full flavor.

Now, pour the water through the grinds in your melita filter and into your cup.

Mmmmmm java-licious.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars So Happy to Find this again!!! Great Coffee Maker!!!!!, April 8, 2004 This review is from: Perfect Brew Cone Filter (Pack of 12) (Grocery) This little gadget makes the best coffee (read about it long ago in a Tony Hillerman novel, and what do you know!, it really was as good as Joe Leaphorn said!). Anyway, I've had a couple of these for twenty years and broke one. I have been searching high and low for years to find a replacement. I'm so happy to be able to buy it again and now I can get extras for gifts. People are always so surprised when they taste the coffee. It's always perfect and tastes much better than coffee made in most coffee makers. As long as you can boil water, you can have a great cup of coffee wherever you go. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and efficient way to make great-tasting coffee, March 5, 2006 This review is from: Perfect Brew Cone Filter (Pack of 12) (Grocery) Next to a french press, this is the simplest and most efficient way to make great-tasting coffee. The primary advantage that filter cones and french presses have over drip brewers is that drip brewers usually do not get the water hot enough to brew the coffee properly. Coffee is very temperature sensitive, and even a degree or two can make a big difference to the discerning palate. The temperature you should aim for is around 197-202 degrees F (not 175, as another reviewer stated); bring your water to a boil, turn off the flame and grind your coffee beans, and when you're done (1-1.5 mins later) your water should be about the right temperature. The amount of coffee you use will depend on the coarseness of grind and volume of water, but start with 3-4 tablespoons per 10-12 oz. cup then experiment according to taste. If you use high quality, freshly-roasted beans, evenly ground and brewed at the proper temperature, your filter cone will produce coffee rivaling most coffee shops.

The main disadvantage of the filter cone is that they are generally made out of plastic, and you can sometimes taste the plastic in your cup. If you're lucky enough to find a ceramic filter cone, I would get it because ceramic doesn't leave any residual taste.
